Early Life and Education

A drawing of the capital of a composite-style column. The light column and capital stand against a dark background that silhouettes it at the bottom and fades slightly toward the top. The column and capital are drawn from a low angle looking up. The main lines of the drawing are thin and drawn in a red-brown ink. The area between the lines is shaded delicately with a gray-blue crayon. The ornament on the capital consists of volutes (geometric curls), acanthus leaves, and flowers. A large inscription in the upper left in all capitals reads “Rome, Temple de Mars Vengeur.”

Hood was well-prepared for many of the demands of the École thanks to the emphasis on architectural history and drawing at MIT, which had an impressive collection of photographs and drawings, like the one on the right.
